My recent themes

This is a selection of my summer’s output made at my studio in Western France.

Throughout July and August 2025 I had a wonderful period of painting the sights and sounds of rural life in the leafy Charente region. It is always tonic being there, after managing all the stresses and strains of London. Unusually, there were no scorching heatwaves and conditions were perfect for the orchard fruits and surrounding wildlife. I saw Kingfisher flashing along the Issoire and Vienne rivers, Muntjac deer and Owls nesting in a neighbouring barn. There was an ever present buzz of nature which provided me with inspiration and motifs.

Fly me to the moon

This new series of oil paintings, document my corporeal moments, both real and imagined during my summer spent in rural France.

When I am painting, there is a lyrical balancing act to find ways to express what it feels like to be alive ‘in the moment’. Choosing a motif is determined by my desire to connect with my surroundings, emotionally and symbolically. The volcano series for example has been evolving over a number of years. They started as a memory of seeing the island Vulcano erupting during a sailing trip to Sicily and have developed into a metaphor for remaining positive and full of wonder despite living through this particularly ‘heated climate’.

Prelude series

Many of these painting document my daydreams and soul searching both in London and rural France. Each painting contains a narrative that suggests an event that either is happening or about to begin. This allows for a certain familiarity and encourages the viewer to engage with their own story and notions of how to embrace or overcome challenges.
